Thiamin (vitamin B1) is yellow, water soluble and is not stored in any
appreciable amount. I bet her urine was somewhat more yellow than usual
that day too. My bet is that the yellow color had little to do with
cream, but that that is simply her mental association with the yellow.
The thiamin probably entered the breast cir culation to color the watery
portion of her milk before the kidneys had a chance to excrete the
excess.

K. Jean Cotterman RNC, IBCLC
Dayton, Ohio USA (Who read extensively on thiamin when my married
daughter [I had no legal say-so in her treatment] 18 years ago recovered
within 12 hours from a month long intrapartum coma [starting at 35 wks-
had a C.S. @ 36 wks. with no anesthetic} after the docs finally began
administering thousands of mg. of Thiamin IV through her TPN port and one
vein that hadn't been blown. This was finally after I was put in contact
with a doc who could persuade them on a doctor-to-doctor level. {I never
usedthe word "lawsuit", but I bet they did!] Such a 12 hour recovery is
said to be diagnostic of Wernicke's encephalopathy, which can come about
during shortage of Thiamin from numerous causes if there is an inborn
error of metabolism. She is very thankful her life was spared, though
there was no real knowledge or thought at the time of relactation. She
remains healthy today, though became blind in one eye 6 months after
recovery. "Baby" Jenny is about to graduate from H.S. and will enter USAF
this summer!)
