It continues to amaze me how people will get all upset over "all
those studies questioning the safety of co-sleeping" while ignoring
all the studies by McKenna and others "questioning the safety of NOT
co-sleeping". Whatever fits your previous agenda is what you
believe!

Having gotten that off my chest, here is what I tell moms:
"You will probably come to a time when you are so tired that you
know you are going to fall asleep while baby nurses. At that time,
it will be helpful to know how to nurse effectively in a lying down
position. As long as certain common sense precautions are in place:

a-not in a waterbed (which I point out as controversial, not
absolutely proved to be a danger)
b-no fluffy pillows and blankets aroung baby's face
c-mom not drinking or on anything that makes her abnormally sleepy
d-and baby is not at the edge of the bed-perhaps even has a small
rolled up blanket or firm pillow behind its back

then it is probably safer to doze off next to baby than to risk
doaing off sitting up where baby might roll off your lap. (and I
usually demonstrate how one's arms could relax allowing this to
happen)

This is not "pushing" co-sleeping, but gives it as an option while
pointing out that it should be done with some precautions which, to
me, are mostly common sense.

Winnie
