Hi.

As a Lactation Consultant in private practice, I have had 2 "clients"
since starting the practice in September.  I am pleased that a
pediatrician will make referrals to me.

After sending in my UCLA superbill to one client's insurance company, I
was pleased to hear from them Friday to verify my address and employee
identification number. They said the claim would take about 2 weeks to
process, so I take that to mean that they will pay me.

But yesterday I was disappointed when I got a letter that said Louisiana
Medicaid was denying me provider status with them.  My second client was
on Medicaid and I spent a lot of time with her and her baby.  Also made
a lot of long distance phone calls.  I am glad that the baby is nursing
well now and I consider that worthwhile whether I get paid or not. But
it would have been nice if Medicaid would reimburse me.  I don't feel
right asking this very young mother to pay me the $90 up front.

I will call the number Medicaid gave for questions and do my best to say
that I was saving the government money by getting this baby to nurse and
that I should be reimbursed.  My husband suggested writing my state
representative.  I think I will.  There is bound to be a group in
Louisiana that is working on legislation to change this. I'll talk to
Karen Zeretske about it.
