Dr. Jack, et al.

I have two anecdotes that relate to your "interesting situation". About
2-3 months ago I had a lesbian couple come to my La Leche League meeting
with their 3 mo little boy. The birth mother had had breast reduction
surgery when she was younger. I don't know how this surgery was performed,
but, she states she has a full supply (the baby is obviously well loved and
fed). Her partner induced lactation by double pumping using a hospital
grade machine. The birth mother works at somekind of halfway house where
she works 40 hour shifts. While she is working the baby is feed by his
other mother.

Anecdote #2. One of the children attending my son's cooperative nursery
school and kindergarten has two mommies. Her birth mother has been a
regular attendee at one of our La Leche League meetings. The partner
should be giving birth to another child sometime in February. They plan
for the birth mother to be the primary breastfeeder and the co-mother to be
the backup.

I know that if my husband could have induced lactation while he was taking
care of our son and I had to go back to work I would probably have worked
longer.

Just my .02
