When my children were small, and constantly in one of those Snugli carriers
(I didn't have a sling at the time), I heard the same negative comments. I
pointed out to someone that most of the Olympic running events at the time
were being won by runners from Africa, and you could be pretty certain that
those runners had spent their infancy being carried on their mothers' backs.
It certainly hadn't harmed them!

It's the same mindset that convinces people that babies have to be trained
to sleep alone in cribs, or else they will grow up with all kinds of sleep
problems. Do these people imagine that the Inuit built little igloos next
door to the main one, to stick the baby in at night? Or that Native people
left their babies alone to cry in some separate tent? We visit the restored
village of Longhouses near us, where several families lived together in one
long building, and it's impossible to imagine that the babies were left
alone at night to cry themselves to sleep. And so the theory says that all
these people must have suffered from a terrible lack of sleep and insomnia.
Funny, it seems to me that it's North Americans who are spending all that
money on sleep remedies.
