In answer to the question about whether there is any evidence that it is
better for the baby of a smoking mother to be breastfed, I came across two
that are cited in the newest Breastfeeding Answer Book.

Woodward, A. et al. Acute respiratory illness in Adelaide children: breast
feeding modifies the effect of passive smoking.  J Epid Commun Hlth 1990;
44:224-30.

Nafstad, P. Breastfeeding, maternal smoking and lower respiratory tract
infections.  Eur Respir J 1996; 9:2623-29.

The first reported that the incidence of acute respiratory illness is
higher among artificially fed infants with smoking mothers as compared with
breastfed infants of smoking mothers. The second study confirmed this
protective effect.

Hope this helps,
