The evidence for association between depression and breastfeeding is scanty
at best. If mom is having depression, she should seek professional help.
There are medications for this such as elavil that the AAP considers
compatible with breastfeeding. In light of her previous positive experience
with breastfeeding unwanted weaning is probably more likely to exacerbate the
depression rather than improve it.
