With all this talk on guilt and breastfeeding, I'm looking for a little help
with my beloved sister in law. My dh's brother's wife is pregnant after
about 5 miscarriages. She has two sons from a first marriage. Her oldest
son has a severe case of juvenile diabetes, now under control with an
insulin pump. She is pregnant now with a much wanted child with her second
husband. This woman is my very good friend, she received her bachelor's
degree while working full time and raising two sons. She is very "Type A,"
but warm and loving. I asked her about breastfeeding this baby, and she
says that "she knows it's healthier, but just wouldn't be comfortable with
it." She is pretty much my only close friend on dh's side. I don't want to
alienate her. I did tell her of the research on JD and breastfeeding and
offered to provide sources, which she has not yet asked me for. I sent her
a big box of maternity clothes and a copy of "The Womanly Art of
Breastfeeding," and will probably leave it at that. To me it seems a no
brainer that she would breastfeed this child. Of course, she is from
Central N. York where breastfeeding rates are pretty low (correct me if I'm
wrong Central N. Yorker's), and has never been around breastfeeding mothers,
except for me, once or twice a year. Any advice?
