Hello, Wise Ones,
I have a question from a colleague. A nursing mother had a fever of unknown origin, so her MD decided to culture her breastmilk to see if it was the source of the fever. She had absolutely no signs of mastitis. The culture grew Strep so she was told she couldn't breastfeed the baby. The question is: Are there any published studies that show that there is no value to routine culturing of breastmilk, especially in the absence of symptoms other than fever? He would like to give the mom some ammo to bring to her doctor.
