The discussion of whose quote it is about crying and lungs, bleeding and veins finally made me find the book, 'Around the Circle Gently', a collection of quotes compiled by Lynn Moen and Judy Laik.  My copy is inscribed to me by Lynn herself, I can't resist mentioning.  Lynn was one of the first people who helped me to find literature I could use, on pregnancy, birth, breastfeeding and parenting, when she was running Birth and Life Books in Seattle.  
Linus Pauling has nothing to do with it, put that down to a stressful week.  I got the polio part right, but that's it.
The quote is on page 39, as follows:
'Crying is as good for the lungs as bleeding is for the veins.'  And what do you know? You are all right, and all I got was a mistaken connection to the developer of a polio vaccine.  The quote is attributed to 'Lee Salk, Herbert Ratner, and others'.  No Nobel laureates, unfortunately :-)
While looking for the quote I came across another gem, from someone called Pat Yearian: 'You can't force a child to be independent, you can only force him not to depend on you.'  Further down the page is this Jewish proverb: 'Small children disturb your sleep, big children, your life.'
Better stop now before I commit copyright violation by recounting the entire book.
