That the older sibling had a similar problem suggests a strong genetic
predisposition. Perhaps the mother's own "leaky gut" continues to pass
along quantities of undigested proteins that are causing the reaction.

The problem might respond to an approach discussed on Lactnet of giving
the mother digestive enzymes to help her break down the proteins more
completely. Check the archives, with "digestive enzymes" or "pancrease"
as search terms. Dr. Kathy Leeper (amid her wonderful posts on other
topics), had posted about working with this idea, and it would be great
to hear her latest. Dr. Newman mentions this in his hand-out on
"colic." The only research cited in the archives was a case study
reported in JHL, Vol 18, No1, Feb 2002. pp 50 -52, of work being
trialled at the Davis Medical Centre in Sacramento, described by Barbra
Schach IBCLC.

It certainly couldn't hurt. Combined with the low-allergy diet, it
might also buy some time for the gut to heal.

I'd like to ask a question -- how does the prescription Pancrease differ
from all those assorted "digestive enzymes" in the health-food aisle at
the grocery store?
