I have found that the best way to get 24 hour LC coverage without blowing the
budget out of the water is to get some of your perinatal nurses to train and sit
for the exam...the night shift ones. This is a neat incentive/ bonus for the
night RNs and it gives coverage in the form of someone who can fulfill both
roles at night...thereby seeing "emergency LC cases" when your regular, FT LCs
are off.

It is less expensive for your manager to send two or three night RNs to Lact-ed
(or another program) and to the exam than it is to cover 24 hours a day, seven
days a week. The added bonus is that the night shift (which usually has the most
trouble conforming) will have "peer pressure" to conform to baby friendly
guidelines.
