Hi; I had a call from a mom today who is having a major problem with thrush. She gave permission to post: 4 month old exclusively BF baby, no pacifiers/bottles etc., has been fighting thrush since baby was 1 week old. Mom is beginning to have some of the deeper breast pain & I am hoping she is not developing ductal yeast too. Has already gone through a few rounds of Nystatin (long term use) and tried Gentian Violet three times but baby developed blisters/burns in his mouth. Last time mom was given 1 dose of Diflucan as well as the course of Nystatin; still didn't take care of the thrush. Seems to me she has been on a series of "treat till it's almost gone, wait for the next build up, treat again". She has been eating unsweetened plain yogurt with live cultures, but has also been eating a lot of honey, which I told her to reduce or eliminate. I also suggested the usual cleanliness measures (changing pads, airing nipples, boiling pump parts if used, etc), having Dad checked to eliminate him as a factor, doing short frequent feeds to manage discomfort, trying to get her doctor to do a longer course &/or different medication (vs Nystatin), and directed her to Chris Hafner-Eaton's article on thrush in Mothering magazine. SO: any other advice????? This has been really wearing her down & she is at the point of considering pumping & feeding EBM due to the continual discomfort.... any input would be welcome! Thanks!
