Amy,
Don't feel bad! If he is eating by mouth, why not add the protein
powder to his eggs with cheese, beef with gravy? Tube feeding isn't
always the answer, esp. if he is breastfeeding. The benefits FAR
outweigh the costs. It may take him a little longer than usual to heal,
but the scarring and infections should be a WHOLE lot better with
breastmilk. The formula and protein powder would be woefully inadequate
compared to breastfeeding and po feeds. Where is the dietitian? I did
my rotation in the PICU and burns units, so I know how invaluable the
dietitian is to the team when discussing calorie and nutrient intakes
for children and burns. An RD would or should have backed you up
quicker than another MD, if the RD is up on her breastmilk/lactation.
