We all agree we're a team & no good
comes from infighting.

I'm afraid this isn't infighting from
the viewpoint of those in the trenches.  I feel like I've been
playing in the international lactation league for 19 years, learning
new plays, admiring the strengths of others.  I like my team.
I like the other teams.  I have my strengths & I respect new
players bringing new strengths to all the teams (hospitals, PPs,
clinics, mother support, birth & bf collaborations, all of
them).  I'm even a little jealous of newcomers with so much
excitement ahead, so much to learn and explore.

Here's the problem:  Now the team managers are fighting -- not
the players!

The new language and pathways are
confusing because they break old rules and contradict one another.
For example, a "counselor" may work her way up to earn the
credential "consultant."  Now the "consultant"
can earn an advanced credential called "counselor."
And to do this, the prerequisite is to pay to attend an entry level
course!  The flow chart leads the IBCLC in a circle -- confusing
after years of understanding that the IBCLC is "the" entry
level credential.  Now a CLC can get an "advanced"
credential without ever adding IBCLC -- a far simpler path than the
one to the IBCLC.  Ironically, a lot of IBCLCs have long wanted
advanced credentials to shoot for, specializations to be earned a
hardworking 10 years after the first.  We just assumed it would
come from the IBLCE, "the" international accrediting
organization.

For the first time I have no idea how
to explain to a mom the different credentials in a simple way that
shows logic & teamwork so I can be part of a movement forward.

The biggest problem is that most IBCLCs had no idea this was coming
-- and they've been playing nicely & by the rules for years.

It's time for the team managers to stop by for a chat.
IBLCE & ILCA seals appear on websites promoting the newest
credentials and training.  IBCLCs would like to hear from the
leadership in our field.  Maybe some dialogue here.  More
importantly, there should be clear language on the IBLCE & ILCA
websites educating the public and there should certainly be timely
direct communication with IBCLCs when the playing field shifts.

I've checked my ego at the door.
I just want to know what's really going on.
