I received a call from a mother of a 9-month-old with a hemoglobin value of
9.9. Her pediatrician prescribed iron drops but the baby can't keep them
down. We talked about iron-rich foods, but baby refuses to eat anything.
Not only does she refuse, she throws it up. Mom puts food on her high chair
tray and baby likes to play with it but if she accidentally swallows any of
it, she instantly throws up. Babe's father is highly allergic to
"everything" - wheat, dairy, etc. so they delayed intro. of food until
recently. Pediatrician has referred them to a speech therapist for "eating
issues". Is this referral common? Should mom be concerned about baby's
iron levels? And, finally, am I correct that mom cannot increase iron
levels in her milk by adding more iron to her diet? Other details that may
be helpful: baby was under 6lbs. at birth, family is vegetarian and mom is
very anxious.

Thank you,
