I know this is only anecdotal, but my own personal experience with the birth
of my son was this:

Immediately after birth, he had low blood sugar levels (admittedly because I
hadn't nursed him yet due to a difficult vaginal delivery). The nursing
staff wanted to immediately give him a bottle but I refused and insisted on
nursing him. I nursed him for about ten minutes (colostrum only at his
point) and they checked his blood sugar levels about 30 minutes later and he
was fine. End of story! No subsequent problems.

I don't think that YOU are missing anything. I think the OTHER people are
missing the most current information. I would print off everything that you
can find to include: ABM protocol, AAP protocol, reasons to use breastmilk
over formula, and energy use for bf and bottle feeding.
