Dear Lactnet Friends:

1) Be patient, being on baby time. . .no expectations.

2) Bottle-feed in breastfeeding style, with bottle resting on the bare
breast. Switch sides with each feed. The breastaurant is a good place to
be.

3) Paced bottle-feeding,

4) Remedial co-bathing, for fun, and no expectations.

5) Pumping enough that milk flow is ample and quick, as this will attract
baby to breast.

6) The baby is the one who breastfeeds.

7) Skin to skin and baby wearing as much as possible.

8) Hand expression into baby's mouth.

9) Every approach to the breast to come from baby.

I see a lot of this behavior in my private practice,  as babies are forced
to breast in the hospital and learn to dislike breastfeeding. They
associate going to breast with being shoved.

The most challenging part is sitting on your hands (if you are there with
mother and baby), and helping the mother (who may have learned to force
baby to breast) unlearn those behaviors. Point out how "guiding baby" to
breast got her in this situation in the first place.

10) Sneak up on baby when they are sleeping, as the self-attachment
reflexes have a better chance to emerge then.

11) Baby to breast in a rocking chair, or standing and swaying. Sometimes
motion overrides aversion or refusal.

12) Bait and switch. Let baby start sucking on a bottle or a finger, until
comfortable, then detach and offer breast (that should be right there).
Again, try only once

13) Safe bed-sharing. Mama naked from the waist up. Sometimes magic occurs
during sleep.

14) Patience, patience, patience. Be on baby time. This process always
takes longer than anyone wants.  A baby is a person who can make choices;
make the choice mama wants baby to use so attractive baby gets curious.
