Dear Mary, I am a Certified Perinatal Bereavement Counselor through RTS,
Resolve Through Sharing. They have printed material that you can order for
all types of losses. You can reach them at the National Office 1 800 362
9567, they are out of Lutheran Hospital La Crosse WI. As for the mom who
must take a class after one week delivery, If she can Breastfeed on demand,
frequent and unrestricted right after delivery, her milk will probably come
in by the 5-6th day, based on what I have seen. Then if she Breastfeeds at
night on demand when she is home and rent/buy a double electric piston pump
and pump q 2 hours during the day, hopefully her milk supply wont be an
issue. Why cant dad cup or finger feed, there are other options besides the
bottle. I was told today that the Doctors at my hospital do not want babies
sent home finger feeding.....Because of risk of infection and
aspiration....urgh as if the bottle doesnt flow like the flooded nile....What
if only the LC could teach the parents how to finger feed have them do a
return demo and give them written instructions with a box of gloves and new
syringe/feeding tube to change every 24 hours, would that be safe? What are
other people doing? I had a mom who had really sore nipples and pain t/out
feed, perfect latch and what looked like good suck externally. Finally I
called linda smith, flabbergasted and we determined from mom's hx, separation
after birth for several hours and overdosed epidural for many hours, baby
probably had a oral motor dysfunction causing sucking difficulty. Taught mom
how to finger feed and that night she and dad did that. That am she tried 2
breastfeeds before I came in and said there was no pain, just a little sore
from her previous bruise....She was also thrilled to have some control back,
first time she felt she could do something for her baby without being in
excruciating pain... Anyone else have this experience? Lisa Mooney
