Hi all,

Again, I'm behind in my reading, but....

Jeanette P. asks...

Does anyone else tell moms to invert the shield and put it on the nipple
then straighten it out?

You bet I tell Moms to turn the shield inside out and sometimes I even tell
them to pull on the nipple to pull them out. That way the shield is
completely ON the breast. I get MANY calls from women that have been sent
home from the hospital with a shield (long before their milk has come in)
and they are just slapping the shield on the breast and the babe is
"dragging" the nipple in and out as he sucks. For some strange reason the
mom is complaining of sore nipples. I wonder why? I go to their home show
them how to put the shield on correctly and lo' and behold the pain
vanishes! We then discuss the proper use of the shield, pumping, weaning,
and F/U. I cannot say I use nipple shields for "this reason or that reason",
each situation is different and I make the call for each dyad. I would
absolutely prefer to give a mom a shield than a bottle.

Blessings to all you wonderful, women of knowledge. You are all very dear
to my heart.
