Dear PatG: Saw your question embedded in another post but as I am constrained by time and traveling conditions from being able to find it again, I thought I'd take a quick whack at it here.

There are two variants to spelling "galactogogue," but both have as their root the word "lact," or milk. The suffix "gogue" is also a common standard in medicine, as a substance that promotes the flow of: emmenagogue [provokes menstrual flow], hemagogue [promotes blood flow], galactogogue [promotes milk flow]. So, "lact" and "gogue" must appear in the word as written.

That doesn't leave much wiggle room for spelling variation, but here it is: the little connector vowel between "lact" and "gogue" may be either an "o" or an "a." Since it's a schwa, or "uh," sound, you can't hear any difference between the two slight spelling variants.

From beautiful rainy Borrego Springs Desert, California,
