No insurance does not reimburse for in hospital lactation services. They consider it alongside dieticians - which they pay for on an outpatient basis! However, you are correct, that if ever we are to gain respect and the ability to truly make a difference in our clients, we must be recognized as a true profession, worthy of professional pay. Ultimately, the person paying for the insurance - employers and workers - have to demand that these services be covered. And as I've said before, CPT codes (not diagnostic codes) must be devised that describe what we are doing with our clients (TWO or more) and be adjustable for the complexity of the situation. We need to be considered at least equal to an occupational therapist, a physical therapist, a speech therapist, etc., IMHO. All of whom have codes to describe what they do and whom are recognized as professionals. I think that licensure is a start and the steps backwards (equating CLC's and IBCLC's as equivalents) is a problem. When services are recognized and paid for, when the service provider has credentials and education to demand respect, when there is a need and demand for the profession, then the providers will be there. When there is no need, why go through the hard work it takes to be a provider?

Subject: Reimbursement

Hello...I am wondering if anyone has experience with reimbursement for hospital based IBCLCs. Currently, our hospital does not have any IBCLCs on staff, claiming budgetary restrictions, we are wondering if our services can be reimbursed through insurance, so that we will essentially cover our own costs. Any references or information on this topic would be greatly appreciated. Please feel free to contact me directly. Many thanks in advance!
