Susan:
I am inquiring of my representative at LifeCare Moms At Work (M@W) about any association between LifeCare and Abbott.
She was surprised at my query and wanted to know more. I have done three presentations to employees of a large insurace corporation in my city and never ran across an issue with their materials - until I read your posting.
May I use your message to explain my concerns to LifeCare?
Phyllis

Dear all:
I haven't been paying much attention to Lactnet recently and just had a bizarre conversation. One of my clients in the group mentioned something about infant feeding specialists at Life Care and so I just wanted to find out more information from them. I got the generic response person at Life Care and she wanted to know the name of the client. Since it was a group, I didn't have HIPAA permission to release her name to them. So then the person asked me if I was asking about Abbot. Which I didn't really understand because I thought I was asking about infant feeding. So then I started asking what does Abbot have to do with lactation since I hadn't asked her about that at all, she started to get uncomfortable and referred me off to someone in marketing. So, I left a message asking about my initial inquiry and then asking if they were involved with Abbot since the person actually mentioned it to me. It certainly sounds to me like they are in bed with Abbot by the preemptive defensive response. Why oh why would a lactation program allow Abbot to be involved? It is such a huge conflict of interest. So, instead of being hopeful that there would be a good program, it seems I have unfortunately discovered that it may be a sham program propped up by the formula industry. Anyone out there know anything more about this?

Best,

Susan Burger, MHS, PhD, IBCLC
