Hi, Anne: Hale lists Cipro as L4-Hazardous for breastfeeding but I was
talking to one of my patients who also is a pharmacist who told me that for
the standard 5 day course, she herself would feel comfortable taking Cipro
but that she would not recommend breastfeeding if the mom was on a longer
course for a more severe infection. So there is another opinion.
Remember, as the LC and the MD help a mother make a decision as to whether
to take a med or not, the age/health status of the baby must be taken into
account, as well as how much a baby is nursing per day, as well as things
like the drug's half-life. One option that moms have that we frequently
forget about is to drop down to part-time nursing to minimize the amount of
med that the baby is being exposed to.
Hope this helps.
