Dear Lactnetters,
Today, I saw a mum (with her permission) with a baby
who never latched. He's already 10 days old. He's
already regained his birthweight. He had a normal
vaginal delivery and couldn't quite latched from the
beginning. His mother started with syringefeeding,
then spoonfeeding and finally ended with
bottlefeeding. He just wouldn't stay on the breast
for long. When he came to my clinic today, he looked
hungry and we tried to get him onto his mum's breast,
he stayed on for a few minutes and then started
yelling his heart out. I checked his mouth, tongue
and his palate. I suspected that his tongue may be
too short as he could never quite reach beyond his gum
ridge.

His umbilical cord was also bleeding, so we asked his
doctor to check that he was alright. Doctor thought
that there was nothing to be worried about.

I suggested to the mother to work on encouraging him
to stretch out his tongue to suck. She's going to
syringe feed again and see if we could get him to
suckle from there, working away from reliance on the
bottle.

What would the rest of you suggest?

Doris
