Last year in December there was a short thread about the TRIGR study on the
development of diabetes in children, in which children with at least one
first-order relative with insulin dependent diabetes are randomised to use
different formulas in addition to breastmilk. There is a center in Finland
involved, and on the website for the Finnish arm, there is information to
families considering participating. As far as I can tell from the
information on the website, there are no measures in place connected with
the study to support exclusive breastfeeding among the Finnish participants.
I am translating from the Swedish text at
http://www.trigr.helsinki.fi/ruotsi_perhe.html

"Why participate?
During the follow-up we will be following your child's health closely, in
order to diagnose possible diabetes as early as possible. The child has the
chance to have several visits to the doctor at no charge during the study.
Besides, you receive the study formula free of charge during the first 6-8
months.
Your participation is important to promote the research work striving to
prevent diabetes in children.'

It is remarkable, to put it mildly, that this study has passed inspection of
ethical review committees in both Sweden and Finland, despite language in
the info to parents of participants that directly contravenes the WHO code
on ethical marketing of breastmilk substitutes. It is of particular concern
that the actual participants are unable to make an informed choice, as they
are infants.
