So...any thoughts? Is this "breast as a pacifier" thing real? I have
never
heard of it but I am no expert. Would decreasing feeds at breast help
or
hurt? Baby very attached to mom, parents are AP style folks.

I should confess now that this is my baby. Any thoughts? I'm really
perplexed--and getting more anxious by the moment.

Thanks in advance,
Anh H. Gordon, MD (Family Practice, now SAHM)

Ann,

I seriously doubt this "breast as a pacifier" diagnosis... that
reflects my 20+ years as a pediatric nurse (CPN) who has seen dozens of
FTT kids. I would view this as a form of inadvertant discrimination on
the part of the gastro doc and demand that your daughter be treated as
she would IF she were a bottle fed baby. Surely, the mom of a bottle
baby would not be counciled in this way! They would go right to the
testing, period. What, pray tell, will waiting one month prove other
than how miserable you can make a baby who already has (allergy is my
guess) problems if you deny her the breast?

This is just my opinion, of course.... empirically and not research
based.

Good Luck,

Susan Keith-Hergert RNC, MS, IBCLC
