As regards the IBCLC and CLE debate: Yes, certification and continuing
education hours should be mandatory. But they are not the "be-all" and
"end-all".
We gave one IBCLC in our area to whom many doctors rely on as "expert" who
makes up her rules as she goes along.
She tells mothers to pump from day one and begin bottles right away "so dad
can feed". And coincidentally she either rents or sells them a pump.
She tells mothers to use Lanolin BEFORE problems begin (before the baby is
born). And coincidentally has the Lanolin to sell.
She tells mothers to pump for 3 minutes before nursing and then put baby on.
This will supposedly avoid sore nipples. (And again she rents the pump).
Remember, these are blanket statements she makes - not on a dyad by dyad
decision.
It is hard to have respect for someone who seems to have a conflict of
interest.
Remember IBCLE does not always weed out the rebel.
