I had forgotten I meant to post on what posseting is, and was reminded when
I saw Renate's correct definition, for another context.
Posseting is what English-speaking North Americans call spitting up. (Out
on a limb here as I am not totally fluent in Canadian BF vernacular.) The
Norwegian word is gulping, which means the opposite of what it sounds like.
Sounds like something going down, but means something coming up! But then,
our word for squirrel is 'ekorn', pronounced almost exactly like 'acorn'.
Brits call something 'dust' if it is being discarded. Their expanded
definition of 'dust' includes soiled disposable diapers, fruit peels, tin
cans, you name it, but hardly what you'd consider removing with your vacuum
cleaner (which Brits call Hoovers, no matter what the brand, I think).
So perhaps it isn't so odd that they call baby spit-up something that could
otherwise denote a comforting drink?
