Our Breastfeeding Promotion Committee has been doing presentations on
"mommy's milk" -- showing pictures of animals nursing their young, and a
clip of a mother talking about nursing her baby -- in day cares.
Approximately half of the day cares approached have flat-out refused.
I've only been to two: in the first one, no child came up with answers
about where a baby's food comes from except a store, a cow, a bottle
etc. until they were told, and what was more disturbing is that a little
girl was giggling and covering her face (she knew but was embarassed).
At the Montessori school, however, as soon as the question was asked,
hands shot up "from their mom" "from mommy's body" "from the boob" and
"my brother does that too and he's a baby". So there's two votes for
Montessori. (My personal opinion is that Waldorf would have as many
votes or more... and let's not even get into home-schooled
pre-schoolers!)
