We have had some pretty severe cases of edema - I do believe what causes it
is the amount of IV fluids the woman receives in L&D. The record of IV
fluids sometimes gets overlooked and I am not sure that some of the newer
staff are aware of what overloading a system can do even in a healthy
woman.I know women get lots of fluid when induced but I also believe if they
have an IV for whatever reason, they tend to get more than less. My previous
job involved having students in L&D as well as PP, so I was able to see what
happened. The practice of giving them lots of IV fluids is very common
practice.
