I have read an article about Samoan women who are expected to be rotund.
They eat lots of foods that put on weight and they tend to have periods
return within 1-2 months after birth--even with exclusive breastfeeding.
In the artilce, the investigators claimed that this PROVED that lactation
does not necessarily reduce likelihood of early resumption of fertility.
There is clearly a nutritional component to this. We know that more
well-nourished mothers are likely to begin cycling sooner than those whose
nutritional status is poor (truly inadequeate, not just poor choices).

The mother Linda SMith described is very heavy. This may have something to
do with her early resumption of periods.
