Linda Smith posted about a hospital in her area which is offering an extra
"free" day to moms post partum. The Dec. 18 issue of US NEWS & WORLD REPORT
discusses this trend:
"About a dozen hospitals, with more to come, are following the lead of
University Hospital at Stony Brook in offering women and their newborns a 2nd
day in the hospital for free if their ins. co. won't pay for it. George
Washington University Medical Center last week was the latest to join the
growing pack of hospitals nationwide responding to concerns that a 24 hr. stay,
the max. covered by many health plans, doesn't give new mothers enough time to
learn skills like bf and may put newborns at increased risk from conditions
such as dehydration. ...the extra $15,000 in expenses for free days since the
policy began in July has been more than recouped by an 8 percent jump in
maternity admissions. No one is keeping a list of hospitals that have adopted
similar policies, so ask your obstetricican if your hospital is thinking about
joining the trend."
