Hi, All: I am working with a 42 year-old mom who never thought she would
become pregnant and here she is with a beautiful boy! During her pregnancy
she was diagnosed with non-Hodgkin's lymphoma which was staged about 3
weeks ago at Stage 1. She started a 12 week course of chemo (i don't know
which "cocktail" is being used) almost 2 weeks ago. Before she found out that
the course of chemo would be short, we had been talking about how she
would end nursing. Her baby was delivered just shy of 33 weeks because of
her cancer diagnosis - he is still in our SCN, but doing well and expected to be
discharged home within the next couple of days. She was able to put him to
breast several times before her chemo started and he nurses well. Fortunately
she has had an abundant supply of milk, so he will be able to get her milk for
awhile longer. She has 2 relatives who are currently nursing who would
consider donating milk to her. She asked me about pumping/dumping for the 12
week course and then resuming nursing. She really wants to preserve
breastfeeding if at all possible, as this will be her only baby.
Does anyone have any experience with a mom resuming nursing after a course
of chemo? I realize the answer probably hinges on what type of drug(s) she is
receiving, but any general information anyone has for me would be helpful.
Thanks.
