Re: << The other study that is done, but not all the facets pulled out yet,
concerned why mothers have such a hard time getting breastfeeding started
well during their hospital stay. It's because of all the interruptions
during the day!! Graduate students sat in the hall outside the hospital
room in a large metropolitan teaching hospital, a smaller suburban
hospital, and another hospital that I can't remember the type. The
mothers AVERAGED 52 interruptions during the 8 am-8 pm time period and
the interruptions averaged 16 minutes each! No wonder moms can't get BF
going and babies who need some 2 hr periods of sleep time can't do that
either. She also said that in one of the hospitals the # of
interruptions during the 12 hr was 100!! Changes need to be made to
hospital routines so mothers and babies have some UNinterrupted time
together! An interruption was counted as anyone entering the room--dad,
nurse, housekeeping, etc. She wants to do the same kind of study for the
8 pm-8 am time period. Wonder what that would show? >>

I agree that the number of disruptions, including me/my hospital-LC colleagues, comprise an overwhelming situation for most new parents. But I also think unlimited visitors and visitation periods have a tremendous impact. It's one thing to work with staff to do KC or BF, it's another to do so when every friend and relative of both genders are wandering in, staying forever, etc. And to do so based on infant cue? Hah! (The lack of sensitivity to newborns and their transition to extra-uterine life is appalling.) Can't tell you how many cue-based opportunities are lost because of an overacundance of visitors (who also overstay their welcomes). Occasionally there is the helpful friend or relative who is there for the purpose of facilitating bonding and BF; usually, visitors are a hindrance to bonding and BF. Moms with 2nd or more babies are often better about the number of visitors, but some of them have their other children come for hours at a time. Nothing like a bored toddler/preschooler or two confined in a hospital room to enhance mother-new baby attachment/BF.

I don't think the already overwhelmed new parents are often in a position to understand, much less seek, the role of "parent as child's advocate" at that point. More prenatal education may help, especially if heard from various sources, e.g. midwife/OB, childbirth ed, preadmission instruction, etc.

Well, this has turned into a mildly cathartic vent. Many thanks.

Karen
