I liked Barbara Wilson-Clay's "Field of Dreams" explanation for moms with
delayed lactogenesis, because it speaks to them "where they are" in terms
most will understand immediately. It doesn't require a lengthy scientific
explanation which they fear they may not understand. It simply paints a
picture in their minds that they can translate on their own.

I try to explain things like this as simply as possible to clients since
they are in a stressed out state when I see them and will only hear that
classic "7%" of what I say at most. I tell them to think about how much
adjusting their bodies have had to endure over the last few months. The
body just keeps working to try to do whatever we demand: grow this baby, now
add more fluid, make more blood, change your shape, etc, etc. Now all of a
sudden that baby is gone that the body worked so hard to balance all those
things for and we start bombarding the poor old body with new demands like
drop this hormone, raise that hormone, find someplace else to shove that
fluid, start making milk right now!!! I say, "Can't you just hear your body
saying, 'Wait a minute, I haven't even figured out what I'm supposed to do
with my own fluids yet and now you want me to make what and send it where?"
Usually that gets a laugh and I can see the client's shoulders relax when
she realizes this can't all happen at once, that it's all a process. Then
they may actually hear me when I explain some things they can do to help the
process along.
