To all you who work in hospitals,
I'm in the middle of Hollister/Ameda and Medela as they push and pull
me...
At a conference last spring, I invited the Ameda Reps to come and visit.
I had not seem many Ameda pumps here in AZ and in my hospital they have
only Medela. We've not had problems with the Medela Lactina or Classic. I
did think that configuation of the tubing in the Universal kit was a little
clumsy to put together.
I met with the Hollister/Ameda rep. I liked the machine, the demo, the
rep and the other products that come in that line. The price for the pump
is better if the hospital goes with the rest of the Ameda OB products to
supply the OB dept. The staff had the priveledge of being inserviced and
trialing the pump. They liked it alot. They especially liked the ease of
pulling the tubing out of the package and attaching to the electic pump. We
decided to change to the Hollister/Ameda pump.
Obviously, the Medela rep didn't like that and now has the supply/buyer
for our hospital corporation involved in a cost analysis and they are
suppose to decide for the whole corporation if we (the individula hospital)
have a choice or if we have to go with one company or the other as a
corporation.
The Medela rep came yesterday. Showed off the new Symphony pump. I
like that, compact, slick and quiet. I like the barriers built in and a
part of the tubing. I had no one to demo pumping breasts, however. There
is no way that milk can contaminate the pump and that was one of the things
I liked about the Ameda.
They tried to figure out why we were changing. In the discussion she let
me know that in another state there had been reports of fires in the Ameda
pump. Pump parts break and there are whole hospital OB depts and agencies
that are changing back to the Medela because their experience was so 'bad'
with the Ameda pump. These are reps talking...
So...my question is what is your experience? Any thoughts about the
benefits/problems of either pump? I need to make a decision and want
feedback from others about their experiences. Thanks for the discussion. I
appreciate this great body of knowledge and experience!
