Claudia -

Actually the quicker cycling should reduce pain to the mother. A long "off
time" of the pump is likely to decrease the milk production rather than rest
the nipples. The quicker cycles will release the nipple faster and decrease
the pain.
A more likely scenario is that the PNS Advanced is available from a lot of
big box stores and mom assumed that because it is a good pump in general, it
will fit her as well. I suspect she bought it from someone who did not know
anything about pumps and the differences between them.

I would STRONGLY suggest that she have an experienced eye check the flange
size. Oh, and measuring the actual nipple size does not seem to help, it is
more a factor of where the "sweet spot" is that gets the milk out than
breast or nipple size.
