A question was brought to my attention by an OB office staff nurse, so I may
not have all of the facts. But, she said that a client who was breastfeeding
was told to stop breastfeeding for a week because her baby had "breastmilk
jaundice". She has continued to pump. When I asked what were the symptoms
exhibited by the baby, they were that only the whites of the eyes of the baby
yellow when breastfeeding, and that they clear when on formula. It sounds to
me like a physical problem with the baby; possibly liver? But, I told the
nurse that it is very, very rare to have to stop breastfeeding, and also
discussed the breastmilk jaundice topic and unnecessity to stop
breastfeeding. So, my question is, Has anyone else heard of whites of eyes
yellowing with breastfeeding and not with formula?
Thanks!
