I had a mom call today who bought a pump from me over a year ago. Well
her question was not about pumping, but how to get her milk to dry up.
Her daughter went from nursing 4 times/day to none at about 12 1/2
months, cold turkey. It is now 20 weeks post weaning and mom's breasts
are still extremely full and very painful, still leaking several times a
day when she says they feel like they're "going to burst". Her doctor
told her to bind her breasts "back when", but she wasn't dumb enough to
follow that advice. She has been wearing a snug bra 24 hr/day (and no
mastitis!). It hasn't worked and she is very uncomfortable. She says
the breasts have no stimulation, she doesn't even let the shower run on
them. I recommended cabbage leaves all the time for several days. She
is back to work and says the cabbage odor is strong and so can't do it
during the week. She will do it this weekend though. I read in
someone's post about tincture of sage (she doesn't like the flavor of
sage, e.g. the tea) and gave her the recommended dosage. But what else
can you think of? Is there something she needs to have checked
physically? She is very frustrated and uncomfortable and hopes you have
some suggestions for her.

Warmly,
Pat Bucknell, IBCLC
