While doing laundry the other day I noticed a greasy stain on a pair of
pants.  It didn't come out after 3 washings (1st was the original wash, 2nd
using a paste of detergent, 3rd using dish soap)...sigh.  So I tried my
new-found magical cleaner - water softener.  Got the stain wet - rubbed in a
bit of the water softener (found in the detergent section of the grocery
store) and lo and behold!  Stain gone!  This stuff works great for basic
cleaning too...and no smell like the other cleaners...
