Elizabeth,
Sounds like you have some good ideas.
Another would be to have mom nurse him to sleep then leave for the guest room. After that the baby is all dads. Mom can even try some extra pre-sleep feeds to fill the bay before bed.
Some tricks Ive (me persoanlly)used are, if the bay wakes hold him, if he is crying too much and fights being held but him in a crib ( pardom the 4 letter word) some safe toys if need be and sleep next to the crib. The message being I'll be here with you but no playing at 2 AM.  Or dad can get up and walk the baby until baby falls asleep. It will eventually happen. I'd recommend an afternoon nap for dad prior to doing this and maybe ear plugs if needed. If dad is lucky the baby will be OK with a rocking cair. If the baby is a boy they can watch "The Man Show" on Comedy Central. Lots of stuff any mom would disapprove of on that show or there are some good stories on the History Channel late at night when one is too tired to read.
