Several of you have suggested this in the case of babies who seem to be
getting too much "foremilk" vs "hindmilk".  I have seen the suggestions
always put in terms of x hours on one side before offering the other.  I
have been wondering if it might be more effective to put it in number of
feedings before switching instead.  I have been suggesting 3 feeds on
the same side, then switch.  If that yields excellent results,
continue.  If it makes a little difference, increase the number of feeds
on the same side before switching.
I can see that one situation in which this approach may not work is the
baby who nurses frequently either as small meals or nursing frequently
for comfort.  For them, 3 feeds can occur in 1-2 hours!  However, if
baby is going longer between some feeds and perhaps only eating once in
3 hours, will the "same side" approach not be as effective?
Using number of feeds rather than hour timeframes would allow more for
differences between indivudual babies patterns as well as interfeed
variations in a single baby.
