Dear Friends:
Jan asks for some details about this paper "Multiple food allergy: a
possible diagnosis in breastfed infants." Acta Pediatr 1997; 86:1042-1046.
Eliminating cow's milk from the maternal diet was not enough to help the
babies. " A positive prick test in the infant strongly suggests, but does
not
prove, food allergy." Prick tests were done with mother's milk, and
intestinal permeability tests were also performed. The authors conclude
that
one first has to prove food allergy in the child, then search for the
allergens before manipulating the mother's diet.
This study is worth reading and raises questions as much as answering
them. For instance, infants whose mothers refused to change their diets,
were
given extensively hydrolysed formula ( a Nestle one: Alfare) until symptoms
disappeared and the infants could be challenged with their mothers' milk. My
understanding is that hypoallergenic formula will still cause reaction in
some children.
   What a complex topic.
   Warmly,
Nikki Lee RN, MSN, Mother of 2, IBCLC, CIMI, CCE
