Watching Nova today, they had a program about an Veterinary
Hospital. One of the first animals they showed was a premature
horse that had just been born. They talked about the importance
fo that fola getting her mother's milk for the immunities and
then talked about the fact that they keep the mother in the room
with the foal while they are working on her, the reason they gave
was because of the importance of the maternal bond, and that if
they did try to separate them, mom would get very upset about it,
and when they did re-introduce them, the mother would maybe not
respond so well.

I could not help wonder why they allow horses to stay together,
recognising the importance of that bond, and the importance of
getting mom's milk into that baby, but humans do not get the same
treatment! Maybe moms are going to have to go berserk over the
separation before getting what they deserve--no separation! But
then, probably mom would be determined to be a dnager and would
never see her baby... <sigh>

Pretty sad that amimal moms and babies get more respect for their
needs to be together than humans.
