What if Prenatal Vitamins are WAY too low in Vitamin D?
Most moms likely do NOT have adequate intake of vitamin D3 to benefit their exclusively breastfed infants.  In 2006, researchers found that high dose vitamin D3 intake is critical for both mother and nursing infant in order to achieve good circulating levels of 25(OH)D--needed for adequate transfer to infant for proper growth and development. They found prenatal vitamin content at 400 IU D3/day, within the recommended RDA,  "supplied only extremely limited" amounts of vitamin D to their infant during breastfeeding. They also found that "6400 IU D3/day  elevated circulating 25(OH)D in both mother and nursing infant." We have yet to understand the full lifelong consequences of such a difference in D3 need and intake for mother and infant. It is imperative that the daily RDA of vitamin D be raised and more people be tested and treated for Vitamin D Deficiency (VDD)--especially lactating mothers. Research reports over 300 illnesses are more common and a higher risk with VDD (Vitamin D Deficiency).
