What a great topic!

I spent yesterday at a cont. ed (for soc. work) course discussing
trauma/attachment, etc. (Creating Sanctuary. The woman who developed
this model for treating trauma is redifining what trauma is and how to
treat it). Talked about birth in today's society as trauma (!) and
attachment as a way to heal.

Anyway, you might want to look at the attachment theory literature.
There is a new book that contains most of the major lit on this: Shur,
Alan (sp?); Attachment theory in the development of the self (????).
Don't have the exact citation.

Lots of luck on this front. I think it's long overdue.
