What if the epidural were combined with pitocin induction? The trend here is
to induce labor at or before 38 weeks (because baby might get "too big..."
which is ironic because with all of the smokers, the average size is pretty
small.).

The mothers are not only being numbed and not feeling the oxy rush, but the
pitocin is taking up receptors which might otherwise be filled with
oxytocin. Instead of getting a slowly-building oxytocin response from early
labor through breastfeeding, they are getting a sudden jolt after the
receptors clear from pitocin and the numbness has worn off.

Big experiments on little people!
