Dear all:

You would think that the American Academy of Pediatrics would have learned its lesson with the powdered formula after two parents sued over the issue of powdered formula. I don't know what ultimately happened with the lawsuits, but around the time I was developing a talk, CBS in Chicago reported on two infants because the NICUs gave their babies powdered formula without informed consent. One baby died and one baby suffered from brain damage. I don't EVER want to get sued. Since the POWDER itself is not guaranteed sterile I think it is absurd to suggest that cold water would be sufficient. I'm not even sure that boiled water would really help -- but if you had nothing else but the powder available, I suppose it would be better than starvation.

The burden of proof is on proving that formula is safe which has not been done. It is never as safe as breast milk as evidenced by the 20% higher risk of death among infants in the United States. We freak out over plastics in bottles, yet we accept a death rate that is 20% higher merely because we can't accept we have done something dangerous for several generations. Chen A, Rogan WJ. Breastfeeding and the risk of postneonatal death in the United States. Pediatrics. 2004:113(5).

When you have an increase in the risk of death of that nature -- I think you really have to go a long way to PROVE that pasteurized human milk is more dangerous. Mothers can be taught to share human milk safely and I personally think this would be far better than formula. Heck even CREATING a baby is fraught with risks because you share body fluids, but I see no one BANNING sex. Kissing is dangerous too.

Sincerely,

Susan E. Burger, MHS, PhD, IBCLC
