Since I don't post all that often and haven't sent in an introduction in
probably 2 years, I thought I'd re-introduce myself.

I'm Gail Hertz, MD, IBCLC, a pediatrician who works in a small private
pediatric practice in York, Pennsylvania, USA. For the geographically
impaired, that's where they make Harley Davidson motorcycles (no, I don't
ride one) and about an hour south of where they make Hershey Chocolate bars
(yes, I eat them). The practice where I work attempts to be breastfeeding
friendly - some days it's hit or miss. When we miss, it's not intentional,
it's just that not everyone knows as much as an LC and try as we may,
sometimes we have difficulty applying what we know. Our office has formula
samples (gasp!)- only given to formula families in need and some formula
sponsored paper work - none regarding breastfeeding, and that's slowly being
replaced. [This is another post entirely!]

I'm the only doc in the area that's IBCLC. I do my 5 year recertification
next year. I see newborns and attend c-sections at two hospitals. One is a
big busy hospital with 4 IBCLCs (one is just for NICU) and the other is a
small hospital with a part-time CLC and "bf peer counseling moms" on the
weekends. There are advantages to both - and both are trying to be more bf
friendly. It's interesting.

My interest is teaching docs about breastfeeding and my claims to fame are
the little green book and the "rose colored glasses and bucket" argument
with Jack Newman [search Lactnet Archives "rose glasses" september 1998].

By the way, I use Jack's handouts in my practice - the moms say they are
very helpful - I think they're great. [you can access them at Cindy's
website www.BreastfeedingOnLine.com ].
